The Patriots and Wide Receiver, Julian Edelman reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension. yesterday.
The extension is worth $11 million with $9 million of that being guaranteed. There are also $4 MM in reachable incentives that could increase the maximum value of the deal to $15 MM.
With incentives included, the Patriots now have Edelman locked up for three more years at $19 MM. For comparison sake, the Rams are paying Tavon Austin $15 MM for next season alone.
According to Pats Pulpit, Edelman’s annual average salary of $6.5 million puts him behind players like Kenny Britt, Marvin Jones, Robert Woods and Pierre Garcon. The deal ranks him as the 23rd highest paid wideout in the NFL.
The contract represents the third team friendly deal between the Patriots and a key cog on their recent Super Bowl rosters.
Tom Brady;s willingness to routinely restructure his deals to save the Patriots money has been well documented. This past off-season Dont’a Hightower also structured his contract in a manner that is favorable to the Patriots cap management.
The new deal should allow the 31-year-old, Edelman to finish his career with the Patriots. Edelman will be 34 when the contract expires.
The contract also locks up the Patriots WR corps beyond the 2017 season. Danny Amendola will be the lone wideout not inked in 2018 and is most likely looking at his last season in New England.
An added benefit of this deal is the continued strong working relationship with agent Don Yee. Yee also represents Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo who will both have serious decisions to make concerning their futures in New England.
Garoppolo will be a 2018 free agent and may be willing to structure his deal in a manner that allows the Pats to keep his cap hit low should he and Ton Brady stay ion the roster together for 1-2 more years.
Regardless of how that situation works itself out, the Patriots number one receiving target will be in Foxboro catches passes.
